The indomitable Benny Carter is, arguably, best known for leading and writing for large ensembles. As a result, Carter's stature as an alto saxophonist has often been overlooked. Thanks to Verve Records founder Norman Granz, however, we can hear Carter in the studio as a straight-ahead player with a series of outstanding smaller ensembles. Compiled from three different dates, some of which remained unissued domestically until this 1991 collection, 3,4, 5 - THE VERVE SMALL GROUP SESSIONS finds Carter playing in a trio, quartet, and quintet, respectively. The sessions are quite different in feel. The quartet numbers (tracks 9-16), originally released as a "pop" album by Verve, with hopes of crossover commercial success, has a somewhat mainstream feel, centering on lush ballads that parade Carter's sumptuous, romantic alto tone. The quintet tracks (17-19) feature a fuller--but equally mellow--sound, with help from pianist Oscar Peterson and the smoothly swinging guitar of Herb Ellis. But it is the all-star summit meeting of Carter with pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jo Jones that is the real treasure here (tracks 1-8). The spare, almost chamber-like feel of this recording does nothing to inhibit the energy or swing of these superior instrumentalists. This is a true jazz gem.

Gypsy Groovz, the orchestra of Vranjska Banja's Ekrem Sajdic, has been selected as the most authentic live band in the history of the "Golden Brass Summit", a music festival that has taken place in Guca/Serbia for 41 years, being called "Serbian Woodstock". Every year in August, hundreds of thousands of people meet in Guca for the biggest brass party in the world. The tunes on "Rivers Of Happiness" are played in a private or improvised style and represent the cheeriest rarity for the music gourmet. When recording this CD the fellows were in a very good mood for being able to incorporate live improvisations by Dusko Goykovich whom they met for the first time. Goykovich who had been dreaming about this for forty years was in a boyish mood and fresh as ever despite his seventy years. At the beginning both parties held back in mutual estimation but during the recording this changed into a creative explosion with laughter and cheering. An old bebop fox when it comes to improvisation, Goykovich very soon found his place in the music profile of the orchestra but stayed loyal to his own way of playing.
This CD reissue has one of trumpeter Thad Jones' finest small-group sessions of the 1950s; the music has also been reissued in full as part of a large Mosaic box set. Jones, who is matched with tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Max Roach, performs a couple of his lesser-known but superior originals, two obscurities, and duets with guitarist Kenny Burrell on "Something to Remember You By," "I've Got a Crush on You" (which was not on the original LP), and "April In Paris." The latter in spots purposely recalls the Count Basie hit recording, in which Jones had played a major part. Kek Lang (Blue Flame) preserves the living musical legacy of its ancestors. The only instruments used to accompany its polyphonic singing style are spoons, metal milk jugs, pot lids and, occasionally, violin and guitar. The performers round out the rhythm by snapping their fingers, clapping their hands and stomping their feet.

É dona de uma postura elegantíssima, de uma forte voz " trés distinguée" e de um estílo muito próprio. Estilo esse que veio mexer com as regras musicais árabes da época (anos 50) e introduzir novos toques, tais como a curta duração das canções, a predilecção das letras acessíveis e as melodias, embora orientais na sua base, abertas às que estavam em voga na altura. O Album é uma colectânea de novas versões de músicas, todas elas compostas pelos Al-Rahbani's.
