This CD reissue has one of trumpeter Thad Jones' finest small-group sessions of the 1950s; the music has also been reissued in full as part of a large Mosaic box set. Jones, who is matched with tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Max Roach, performs a couple of his lesser-known but superior originals, two obscurities, and duets with guitarist Kenny Burrell on "Something to Remember You By," "I've Got a Crush on You" (which was not on the original LP), and "April In Paris." The latter in spots purposely recalls the Count Basie hit recording, in which Jones had played a major part. The music throughout is unpredictable and harmonically sophisticated bop. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
