Jay Leohart nasceu em Baltimore em 1940. Graduou-se em Berklee e começou na orquestra de Buddy Morrow. Depois integrou a secção rítmica de muitos famosos como Marian McPartland, Jim Hall, Urbie Green, Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan ou Lee Konitz. Tem mais de uma dezena de álbuns como líder e destes escolhemos duas sessões para ilustrar a sua prestação em standards. Em quarteto e em trio.
