Serge Chaloff (1923-1957) foi o primeiro saxofonista barítono de topo da era bop. Foi influenciado por Harry Carney , o barítono de Duke Ellington, e por Charlie Parker. Iniciou-se em 1945 na orquestra de Jimmy Dorsey e ganhou notoriedade na de Woody Herman em 1946. No final dos anos 40 Chaloff pouco tocou por se ter tornado um viciado em heroína. Entre 1954 e 1956 gravou como líder. Entretanto foi-lhe diagnosticado um cancro que o vitimou rapidamente, em 1957. Tinha 33 anos. Aqui toca standards desses três anos em que liderou. jazzmin
