A sua forma de interpreter e a sua presença em palco fizeram de Johnnie Ray um fenómeno de interacção com as audiências que até então só se tinha visto com Sinatra, e que haveria mais tarde de explodir com Elvis, primeiro, e com os Beatles a seguir. Talvez o facto de ter problemas auditivos tivesse determinado a sua forma de cantar, mas encontrou um estilo que é inconfundível.
