A Not Too Obvious Collection
Embora não seja muito comum com outros instrumentos à excepção do piano, há vários trompetistas que também cantam. Nesta colectânea juntamos nove, com destaque para cinco deles.

Saban Bajramovic - ROMANO RAJ (2007)

The history of music is full of stories about fortunate outcomes, breakthroughs, fortunate and unfortunate events, misery, tragedies and treacheries. Saban Bajramovic has had plenty of each and some to spare. A legend in his own lifetime, he’s become a synonym for Gypsy music. So many stories have been told about him that there’s no way to separate fact from fiction. He even managed to survive Goli Otok (Barren Island), the infamous prison camp for political prisoners in post-WWII Yugoslavia, though he was imprisoned for deserting the army in order to see his girlfriend. Hard life has left traces and bruises on his soul. God knows how many times he was stabbed, beaten, cheated. In general, his life has been a dynamic turn of events that eventually (and righteously) brought him the title "The King of Gypsy Music" (or "The Nat King Cole From the City of Nish"). Many of today’s famous musicians earn millions by recording some of his approximately 700. However, one thing is certain—there’s no way to separate the man from his songs, lyrics and music. Romano Raj (Gypsy Heaven) marks a new turn for this 71 year-old singer. After fifteen years away from recording, he arrives with a strong album where, as usual, he is the complete author. Supported by Dobrovoljno Kovachko Drustvo (the Voluntary Blacksmith Society), a team of experienced musicians on the Serbian scene, Bajramovic delivers a dynamic album full of passionate vocals, and a tasteful mixture of Gypsy songs with jazz, funk and Cuban flavors.

Oliver Nelson - AFRO AMERICAN SKETCHES (1994)

This CD reissue brings back Oliver Nelson's first big-band date as a leader. Meant as a folk album paying tribute to the history of blacks in America, there are such songs as "Jungleaire," "Emancipation Blues," "Going Up North" and "Freedom Dance." Among the soloists are flutist Jerry Dodgion, trumpeter Joe Newman and Nelson himself on tenor and alto. Even this early, Nelson's writing had its own sound; his seven-part suite is well worth hearing ~Review by Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

FerusMustafov - KING FERUS (1995)

Mustafov is the leading exponent of gypsy wedding music in Macedonia, a style of music which is propelled by electric bass and guitar, drums, keyboards and accordion, all competing to reach ever more dizzying speeds. A saxophonist and clarinettist, Mustafov, based in Sutka, the gypsy suburb of Macedonian capital Skopje (population approximately 50,000) comes from a traditional gypsy music family. Indeed his father, the celebrated Ilimi Jasarov, was the first to introduce saxophone to the wedding music format. Since the early 70s he has released a substantial body of work documented by a vast (generally cassette only) discography. Ora i Coceci is one of the best examples, pairing the artist with simple accordion and bass guitar backing as he embarks on a series of taksmis, or improvisations.

Ernie Watts - UNITY (1994)

The most unusual aspect to Ernie Watts's latest recording is that the great tenor is joined by a two-bass quartet. Eddie Gomez on acoustic and Steve Swallow on electric blend together quite well, are featured in a delightful version of Oscar Pettiford's "Tricotism" and (with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Jack Dejohnette) keep the accompaniment consistently stimulating. Ernie Watts is in top form throughout this fine modern mainstream date, playing with both passion and lyricism on a variety of standards and originals (which, in addition to four songs from the leader, include one apiece from DeJohnette and Swallow). There is just enough variety to keep the proceedings from ever getting predictable, making this one of Watts's finest sessions. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Ron Carter - ETUDES (1982)

Sophisticated, elegant quartet date from '82, with Art Farmer's serene trumpet and flugelhorn playing setting the tone, backed by tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Evans, who's more restrained than usual. Carter's bass and Tony Williams' drums are both understated and definitive in their support and backing rhythms.
